Graduate Studies - PhD program

The Graduate Program offers two types of degrees, the PhD and the PhL.

The doctoral degree requires four years of study, consisting of two years of course work and two years of thesis work.

The licentiate requires two years, also equally divided between courses and thesis.

For the doctoral student the first year courses, in mathematics, statistics, econometrics, micro and macro theory, are compulsory. Second year courses are elective. The elective courses are within the strong research areas of the department, in particular environmental, development, and financial economics.

All teaching is in English.

We have presently an intake of about five new students every second year. The next intake will be fall 2014. 

The department also has, provided that financing is granted, a special intake (the same years) from developing countries where additional students are accepted. These are financed by support from Sida. For more information about this application process please look at this web page.
